Why are my Instagram insights not working?

ยท Ethan Parker, Editor

Insights needs a professional account and only records posts published after you switch. Here is why older posts stay blank, and what to check next.

Instagram Insights only runs on a professional account, which is the free Creator or Business setting, and it only records a post that was published after you switched. Posts from before the switch stay blank for ever, because nothing was counting while they went out.

The one carve-out, and it is the common case: if you are already on a professional account and the screen still looks empty, your account is almost certainly fine. Insights reports on a delay, and a post from the last few hours can show a partial figure, or none at all, until the report catches up.

To see where you stand in about five seconds, open one of your own posts and look directly underneath it for View insights. If that line is missing on every post, the account is still a personal one. The switch lives in your profile, behind the three lines in the top right, under Settings and privacy, in the account type section.

Everything below is the short list of reasons that screen goes blank, roughly in the order they actually happen.

Why older posts stay blank for ever

Insights is not a sum the app works out when you open it. It is a record the app keeps while a post is being seen. On a personal account that record is never kept, so after you switch there is nothing behind the old posts to read. The counting starts at the moment of the switch and only runs forward.

This is worth saying plainly, because people wait for the old posts to fill in and they never do. If you switched on a Tuesday, that Tuesday is the beginning of your history. Likes and comments on the older posts stay visible, since those were always public. Reach, views, saves and shares on those posts were never recorded for you, and there is no way to get them back.

How to tell which account type you are on

  • Open one of your own posts. A professional account shows View insights under it. A personal account shows nothing there at all.
  • Open your profile. A professional account carries an Insights entry in the menu behind the three lines, and a row of buttons a personal profile does not have.
  • If you are still unsure, the switch itself sits in Settings and privacy under the account type section. It is free, it takes a minute, and it does not change how your posts look to anyone else.

The account is professional and the screen is still empty

Then you are almost always looking at the delay. Insights does not update the second something happens; it settles over hours, and saves and shares in particular keep arriving for days after a post stops being new. A number that looks broken this morning is often just early. We go through the timing in when Insights actually update.

If the screen is not slow but genuinely blank, work through the boring causes before assuming anything is wrong with the account. Force close the app and open it again. Update it, because metrics move between app versions and an old build can point at a screen that no longer exists. Try the same account in a browser. If one device shows numbers and another does not, the problem is the app on that phone, not the data.

Where each number actually lives

A lot of missing-data reports turn out to be someone looking at the wrong screen. There are two separate ones. Post insights sit under the individual post and describe only that post. Account insights sit in the profile menu, cover a date range you choose, and will not reach back further than the longest range the app offers you.

Formats do not carry the same rows either. A reel reports things a photo has no version of, and Instagram renames and reshuffles these labels between releases, so a metric you remember can genuinely be gone rather than hidden. Two screens can also disagree about the same post, because they are counted over different windows, which is part of why Insights is less exact than it looks.

Why the audience section is empty

Audience breakdowns, the ones showing where your followers are and when they are online, need a minimum number of followers before Instagram will show them at all. Below that line the section stays empty no matter how long you wait, and the app usually says so on the screen rather than leaving you to guess. Post and account numbers still work while that section is blank.

What Insights never shows anyone

Some of what people call a bug is a limit that applies to every account on the platform. Nothing is broken, and no setting turns these on.

  • Who saved your post. You get a count, never a name.
  • Who shared it, or where they sent it. The share count arrives without a list.
  • Who viewed a feed post or a reel. Only the total, unlike a story.
  • Anything at all about a post published before you switched to a professional account.
  • An engagement rate. Instagram does not calculate one, so you work it out yourself from reach and the reactions on the post.

Things that look like a fault and are not

  • A count that keeps rising for days. Normal. Saves and shares land late, and the report lags on top of that.
  • Numbers that stop at the date you switched. Normal, and permanent. That is the start of the record.
  • A metric that disappeared after an app update. Usually renamed or moved to another row rather than removed.
  • Story numbers that vanish. Story reporting only lives for as long as the story does, and it is not something we touch or sell.

Where a paid month fits, plainly

It fits after the screen works, not before. What we sell is one prepaid month of Instagram engagement, sized by a reach band you choose: the least and the most reach a post of yours should get. Every feed post and reel you publish during those 30 days, up to 30 posts, gets reach, views, likes, shares, reposts and saves aimed inside that band, drip-fed rather than dumped. ReachGrows computes every price on its own server, not in your browser, so the price you are shown is the price charged.

What it cannot do is fix a reporting problem. It cannot switch your account type, it cannot make Insights show a post from before the switch, and it cannot speed up a delayed report. It also does not sell followers or comments. If your numbers are missing, the fixes are the ones above, and they are all free.

  • Why are my Instagram insights not working? Almost always because the account is personal, or the post was published before you switched to professional.
  • Will old posts fill in after I switch? No. Nothing was recorded at the time, and Instagram cannot go back for it.
  • How do I switch? Profile, the three lines top right, Settings and privacy, then the account type section. It is free.
  • Insights are there but the numbers look wrong. Give it hours, not minutes. Saves and shares arrive late and the report settles behind them.
  • Why is my audience section empty? It needs a minimum follower count before Instagram will show it, and the app tells you when you are under it.
  • Can I see who saved or shared a post? No. Every account gets a count and never the names.
