Do Instagram reposts expire? Only the story ones do
ยท Ethan Parker, Editor
A repost on your profile has no expiry date. A post added to your story goes after 24 hours. Here is what makes each one disappear, and when.
A repost sitting on your profile does not expire. It stays there until you remove it, or until the original post it points at disappears. A post you add to your story is the opposite: it goes after 24 hours, on its own, whether you touch it or not.
The exception matters more than the rule, so take it now. A repost is a pointer, not a copy. So a repost with no expiry date can still vanish today, the moment the person who made the original deletes it, archives it, switches their account to private, or blocks you. Nothing on your side runs out of time. The thing it points at does.
You can check both in under a minute. Open your profile and look along the row of tabs under your bio: if your app has a reposts tab, everything listed in it is still live. Then look at the story ring at the top of the app. Anything you shared to your story is in there for 24 hours from the moment you posted it, and after that it is gone from public view.
Do reposts on your profile expire?
No. Instagram does not put a clock on a repost. There is no 30 day limit, no 90 day limit, and no quiet clear-out of old ones. A repost you made last year is still on your profile today, as long as the original is still up and you never removed it yourself.
That surprises people because the two nearest habits, sharing to a story and sending a post in a message, both feel temporary. The repost button borrows the look of a reshare and the permanence of a post. Which of the reshare actions you actually used decides nearly everything else, and the five cases are laid out here.
How long does a story reshare last?
Twenty four hours, counted from when you posted it rather than from when the original went up. After that it leaves the story ring and stops being visible to anyone who visits your profile.
It is not deleted from your account, though. If story archive is switched on in your settings, an expired story lands in your own archive, where only you can see it. That is a private shelf, not a public one. A visitor cannot reach it, and it is not a way to keep a reshare alive.
Can you stop a story reshare from expiring?
Partly. You cannot extend the 24 hours, but you can save the story into a highlight, and a highlight sits under your bio for as long as you leave it there. That is the only way a story reshare stays reachable from your profile.
The catch is that a highlight is still a pointer. Save someone else's post into one, and the day they delete that post your highlight goes blank. It never kept a copy for you.
What makes a repost disappear before you remove it?
- The original was deleted. A repost carries the original rather than copying it, so removing the source empties every repost of it at the same moment.
- The original account went private and you are not a follower. The post still exists; you simply lost the right to see it.
- The account blocked you, or the account was disabled. Same result, arriving faster.
- The creator switched resharing off in their own privacy settings, which takes the option away from everyone at once.
- You removed it yourself, which takes it off your profile straight away. Undoing a repost is the one ending you control.
None of those is an expiry. They are one fact wearing five outfits: a repost was never a copy, so it can only live as long as the thing it points at.
Does the share count drop back down when a story expires?
No. A share is counted when it happens, and the count does not run backwards a day later. The creator keeps the number. What they lose is the traffic, because once the story is gone nothing is sending anyone to that post any more.
The same holds for the views, likes and saves the reshare brought in. Those landed on the original post while the reshare was live, and they stay on it afterwards.
Do reposts sent in a direct message expire?
The message does not. It sits in the chat for as long as the chat does. But it is the same pointer as everything else here, so it turns into an empty box the moment the original is taken down. And a message never touched your profile in the first place, so there is nothing there to expire.
Existing is not the same as being shown
This is the part worth more than the expiry answer. A repost keeps existing. That is not the same as it being carried into anyone's feed. Instagram pushes a post while it is new and while people are reacting to it, and a pointer sitting quietly in a tab is not asking to be shown to anybody. Someone has to visit your profile and open that tab.
So the honest framing is this: reposts do not expire, but the attention they bring does. If you reshared something to help a friend, the help arrived early. Checking next month whether the repost is still on your profile tells you nothing about whether it worked.
How to check which of your reposts are still live
- Open your profile and tap through the tabs under your bio. If you cannot see a reposts tab at all, here is where the app keeps them.
- Tap one. If it opens the original post, that repost is fine. If it opens nothing, or shows a blank placeholder, the source is gone.
- Check your highlights the same way. A blank cover on a saved reshare usually means the original was deleted.
- For stories, look at the story ring. If it is not there, it is past 24 hours, and the only way to bring it back is to share it again.
There is no screen anywhere in the app that lists the reposts which have broken. You find them by tapping them, which is a nuisance and worth knowing before you go looking.
A paid month cannot make a repost last longer
The limits first, because they are the useful part. Nothing we sell makes a repost last longer, and nothing brings an expired story back. Both are decided by Instagram and by the person who published the original, and neither is for sale by anyone.
What we sell is one prepaid month of engagement on the posts you publish yourself. You pick a reach band, give a public username with no password, and every feed post and reel you publish over the next 30 days, up to 30 posts, gets reach aimed inside that band, drip-fed at a natural pace. ReachGrows delivers reach, views, likes, shares, reposts and saves. It does not touch Instagram Stories. One PayPal payment, nothing stored, nothing that renews on its own, and the FAQ lists what is in and what is out.
- Do Instagram reposts expire? No. A repost stays on your profile until you remove it or the original disappears.
- How long does a story reshare last? Twenty four hours from when you posted it, then it leaves public view.
- Can you make a story reshare permanent? Only by saving it to a highlight, and that still breaks if the original is deleted.
- Why has my repost gone blank? The original was deleted, archived or made private, or the account blocked you.
- Does the share count fall when the story goes? No. Counts already recorded stay on the original post.
- Does an old repost keep earning reach? No. It keeps existing, but it stops being pushed into feeds long before that.
